The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) is a statutory body established by the Government of India under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act passed by the Parliament in December, 1985. APEDA has marked its presence in almost all agro potential states of India and has been providing services to agri-export community through its head office at New Delhi and 16 Regional offices across the Country.
APEDA has been assigned the functions of developing export related industries, registration of exporters of scheduled products, fixing standards and specifications of scheduled intended for exports, inspection of meat plants, processing plants, storage premises, improving packaging of scheduled products, improving marketing of scheduled products outside India, promotion of export oriented production, training in various aspects of industries connected to schedule products.

In addition to this, Basmati Rice has been included in the Second Schedule of APEDA Act, APEDA has been entrusted with the responsibility of Import of sugar as well. APEDA also functions as the Secretariat for implementation of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) for organic products. Cashew Kernels, Cashewnut Shell Liquid, Cardanol are now under the jurisdiction of APEDA.
